Drowning in Debt? 3 Actions to Start Today.

Financial hardship is like a screaming child in a car seat. You try to tune her out, or pacify her with a glance in the rear-view mirror but she doesn’t settle down until you give her your full attention. Giving your money the attention it deserves has the power to completely change your life.

During my money crisis, I used to swipe my credit card as my better judgment yelled, “How are you going to pay for this?”  Can you relate?  Despite the loads of financial advice out there, I found almost no counsel on handling the heap of emotions tangled in my lack of money and options.

Here are 3 strategies that actually worked. Starting today, they can take you from screaming in financial high anxiety to Money Calm.

  1. Break the silence and come out of isolation.  Ask for help.  Thousands of people are right where you are and hundreds of thousands of people have fixed money problems successfully. I am one of them, going from over $80,000 in debt to being able to pay all bills and stash $2200 a month in savings.

  2. Give attention to your cash and to the shame and worry tied to handling money badly. That doesn’t mean you have to eat only ramen or spend hours in counseling. Acknowledge where you are and work out physical and mental processes that motivate you to set things right. Small, deliberate steps like budgeting, making wise spending choices or forgiving yourself for past money mistakes brings financial stability and personal peace.

  3. Persist and celebrate your progress.  Set milestones and applaud your wins along the way with small rewards that keep you going. The journey to becoming financially free is a series of small steps that you can start today.

Imagine a life without stress about money. Imagine exclaiming, “I am financially free!” Imagine feeling Money Calm.
